I’m not a portrait painter. If I’m anything, I have always been an autobiographer and a chronicler of my life and family.
I have told my life in images. I am drawn to painting because the process of painting has always had meaning for me. It has the quality of a live performance, with all its unforeseen risks and the knowledge that what you do can never be exactly repeated. If you destroy a painting in order to go deeper, there is no way you can bring the lost image back to life again. I am attracted to painting rather than to sculpture, say, because an object in the middle of a room or space, however powerful, is no match for the intensity of focus demanded by a painting fasted to a wall.
